Twice the Popery

"...and history informs us, that, on a pressing occasion, the blessed St. Peter also ordained two pontiffs under him to rule the Church at Rome..." - St. Bede's "Lives of the Abbots"

I just read that sentence, and was kind of shocked. ... 2 popes at once, that'd be cool. I think Martin Luther had nightmares about that.

I meant 2 legitimate popes, after all the Great Schism (Western Schism) saw the pope and anti-popes running around Avignon and Rome.

  1. Wait plurality within the Presbytery of first century rome? Well it contracts Eusebius, but Clement I also does when speak of the plurality of the presbytery.

  2. I think you meant Episcopacy, and it doesn't matter if there's more than one bishop it matters that the bishop is not the priest (presbyter) they're separate lol I already won this debate (in my mind).

  3. No I meant Presbytery; at the time of Clement and/or Peter that was what is found in NT and Clementine epistles.

Don't worry I won it in my mind too. LOL I love it! :)

  4. Andrew, I've always been curious about this. What role does the apostle Paul play in the Roman Catholic church, since he seemed to view himself as an equal to Peter and derived his authority, not from the church in Jerusalem (or Rome) but from Jesus himself. Just something that popped into my mind as I was reading your post.

  5. Hey Derik (I'm assuming my old youth pastor and not some other Derik) I'll write a post about Paul next and hopefully it will clear things up.

It's appropriate as the Bishop of Rome (Pope Benedict XVI) has declared it the Year of Saint Paul
