"I the LORD search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds."

But then, I love the interplay in Scripture of the command/Law to "circumcise your heart" (Deut 10:16) or "make yourselves a new heart" (Ez 18:31) that turns into a promise/Gospel: "I will circumcise your hearts" (Deut 30:6) and "I will give you a new heart." (Ez 36:26)

The weight of the Law is lifted by the promise of the Gospel. What is commanded is left to be received. What God demands, God supplies in Christ. The place of withdraw is not the heart, but Christ and the Gospel.Jared Nelsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18445783451815077626noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2970772341265505777.post-19642414192423154742010-04-18T11:33:23.724-07:002010-04-18T11:33:23.724-07:00Andrew, It's less a matter of failing or succe...Andrew, It's less a matter of failing or succeeding and more a matter of not settling for what's most apparent... a deeper existentialism: the heart feels awe before what is and longs for what it knows exists insofar as it's absent. The heart is not satisfied with being right or being on the right side, but desires complete satisfaction in every aspect of life. Heart includes feelings, reason, and will - the self, the person....

Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) #2563:
The heart is the dwelling-place where I am, where I live; according to the Semitic or Biblical expression, the heart is the place "to which I withdraw."
The heart is our hidden center, beyond the grasp of our reason and of others; only the Spirit of God can fathom the human heart and know it fully.
The heart is the place of decision, deeper than our psychic drives. It is the place of truth, where we choose life or death. It is the place of encounter, because as image of God we live in relation: it is the place of covenant.Fredhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01262662173303042998noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2970772341265505777.post-10228040160858872010-04-18T10:35:39.417-07:002010-04-18T10:35:39.417-07:00sorr Fred, I guess I just am trying to reconcile m...sorr Fred, I guess I just am trying to reconcile my existential experience wih my philosophical beliefs.
